Kidney Biopsy Registry

Worldwide, and also in Switzerland, kidney diseases are on the rise. They often remain undetected for a long time. The main causes are high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, though many other, sometimes rare, factors can also trigger them.

The decentralized structure of the Swiss healthcare system makes it challenging to assess the prevalence, progression rate, and treatment of these diseases, and to conduct clinical studies on rare diseases.

The Swiss Kidney Biopsy Registry (SKBR) aims to close these knowledge gaps. It collects data from patients across Switzerland who undergo a kidney biopsy – including age, sex, indication for the biopsy, tissue analysis results, treatment, and disease progression.

The goals of the SKBR are:

  • To gather reliable data on the prevalence of various kidney diseases in Switzerland
  • To advance research on these diseases
  • To gather information on current treatment standards
  • To share knowledge with physicians and provide treatment recommendations

Through this effort, the SKBR aims to sustainably improve both patient care and research of rare kidney diseases in Switzerland.
